you gotta do what you love...

Seeing your child do what they love is a great experience.

When a 7 year old boy, who can't sit straight in his chair during dinner for more than 30 seconds, who pokes his pencil in his ear and between his toes while doing a math lesson and taps both feet, conducts the choir from his pew and pretends his fingers are little men during Mass...

When this Tom-Sawyer-of-a-boy can sit for an hour and a half with an 18 year old girl on a couch covered with a yellow coverlet and discuss the best way to sketch a cotton field and his preference for vine charcoal over pastels...

when THIS happens...

you know you've hit the jackpot.

You just gotta do what you love...

space launch...

So, this weekend, we had the amazing experience of travelling to Dallas and going to the King Tut Exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art.

AMAZING

is all I have to say.

And, if you can go... GO! We just loved it!

Over the weekend, Emelie had been perfecting the art of bugging her little brother. Tricking him, teasing him, etc...

He put up with her.

Then, as we left the museum, we were talking about all the amazing things that the Egyptians made and invented. Imagining what it would be like to live back then...

Jonathan: "I know what I will invent."
Mom: "what?"
Jonathan: "I will invent a space launcher. And I will launch Emelie into outer space."

You should have seen the shock on Emelie's face! It was almost as good as the smug look of satisfaction on Jonathan's.

Take that big sister! You just wait!

the little ones I love...

Jonathan: has a crush on our babysitter. He was recently quoted in his classroom newsletter: "Tooth Fairies are real, but magic, like making someone float, is a trick. I've seen it." He can draw just about anything. He played his last soccer game in the rain and had a blast!

Emelie: gets angry when Katherine calls Emelie's old imaginary friends on the play telephone. Likes to read Star Wars, Little Women and Nancy Drew. She's a super piano player. She likes to clean the bathroom. The other day, she walked up and said, "Mom, I really think we should clean the bathroom more often. It gets gross in there really fast!"

Katherine: likes to make her big sister mad by calling Emelie's old imaginary friends on the telephone. Katherine's imaginary friends are Belisa and Shalla. Belisa's mommy's name is "Big Belisa" and Shalla's mommy's name is, you guessed it, "Big Shalla". She likes to creep around the house at 6 am, turn on all the lights and search for candy. She likes to wear dresses and very fancy shoes. Some days she wants to be called "Callie".

Colleen: likes to crawl behind the couch and pull my lamp over. Then she heads over the the TV console and pulls the wii remotes off the charger, sits back and grins. When she smiles, she still gets her crinkle across her nose and her eyes still get squinty... and she smiles a lot.

What Jonathan would do for Alvin and the Chipmunks...

So, the other day, Emelie and Jonathan were watching their new Alvin and the Chipmunks DVD (our favorite movie, by the way!). The movie was beginning and the FBI warning popped up on the screen. Since they also watch the older episodes of Star Wars, Jonathan thought that any text at the beginning of a movie would be very important to the plot, and asked Emelie to read the warning to him.

She did, and finished with the part, "The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to five years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000." "

Jonathan sat there for a moment, deep in thought, and then asked, "Well, do you still get to keep the movie?"

Cheez-It Cereal

Emelie and Jonathan were outside riding bikes, since they had a day off from school.

Emelie came in and got a snack of water and Cheez-Its for herself and her brother.

About 10 minutes later, Jonathan came back in carefully carrying his bowl into the kitchen, like he was trying not to spill something. Curious, I asked what was in the bowl.

He said...

"Emelie gave me some of her water so I could make Cheez-It cereal. It was really GOOD!"

Boys are gross. Funny, but gross!

How to get more $$ for your tooth...

So here's the story. Jonathan lost his first tooth the day after Colleen was born. He was very excited because in Kindergarten you get to put your name on this giant tooth when you loose one. Anyway, he wrapped the tooth up in a little envelope he made and put it under his pillow before he went to bed.

As usual, Curt and I kept hearing various clunking and chattering noises coming from the back of the house. Nothing new there. We heard the bathroom door slam shut and water running in the sink. Again, nothing new. Then, bathroom door opens and Jonathan comes out into the living room, with huge tears in his eyes, holding back a sob. He's holding his bottle of tooth paste and a barrette. Here's what happened:

He told us, between sobbing and sniffling, that Emelie informed him that if you have a very clean tooth, the tooth fairy will give you a extra money for it. (Curt and I did not know of this fact) So, Emelie told Jonathan the he should go and brush his tooth really well before he went to sleep. He did just that, always willing and eager to follow the advice of his big sister. He got his tube of toothpaste (the kind that stands upright on the counter) and squeezed it while he held the tooth over the opening to catch some paste on it. Then, he let go of the tooth paste tube, and it sucked his tooth into the tube! He tried to fish it out with Emelie's barrette, but that only crammed it further down.

So, Curt had to perform surgery on the tooth paste tube to get the tooth out, which was, after all, now very clean.

The tooth fairy left Jonathan a $1.25.

don't you wish you were little again...

Watching a movie in a laundry basket... how nice. At least we have enough for everyone. I did have to dump out some laundry in order to accommodate everyone.

The pirates are quite active - playing volley ball, getting their legs chomped off by sharks, eating coconuts, getting blown up by cannons, climbing the pirate ship nets, sword fighting and the like! Who doesn't love a Jonathan!!

napping in the living room

Emelie and Jonathan take a Christmas time nap on the living room floor. They set this up themselves - we thought they were playing, but they were sleeping. When does that ever happen?
